SURFACE PREPARATION Because coating life is dependent primarily upon surface preparation, this aspect of the cleaning program should receive very thorough consideration. The requisite of any method of surface preparation is that the surface be thoroughly cleaned of any material or contaminants that are liable to cause premature failure of the coating. Prior coating the substrate is to be clean, dry and free from contamination and should be assessed and treated in accordance with ISO 8504:1992. Oil or grease should be completely removed using a suitable solvent. Metal Preparation using Abrasive Blasting: Remove all weld spatter. Grind sharp edges to 3mm radius and make sure all welds are smooth and solid. Metal surfaces must be abrasive blasted to a metallic white finish. A de-rusting degree of Sa 2½ as specified in ISO 12944-4 and a "medium G" roughness degree as specified in ISO 8503-1 must be achieved; minimum roughness Rz = 50mm. On completion of blasting clean surface with clean air and ensure that all contaminants are removed. PV211-PRIME must be applied before any flash rusting occurs and on the same day as blasting. Any surface defects revealed by the blasting process must be repaired, re-blasted and patch primed.
APPLICATION Mixing: No mixing of different packs is required. The product is single pack. Agitate PV111-PRIME prior to use using a power agitator. Pot life: No short-term pot life as single pack system Airless Spray: Suitable - Tip Range: 516 - 517 - Total output fluid pressure at spray tip not less than: Air Spray: Suitable (Pressure Pot) Brush: Suitable Roller: Suitable Thinner: May be thinned with MEK to a maximum 5% MEK by volume Cleaner: Simple detergents Work stoppages: Do not allow material to remain in hoses, guns, spray equipment or brushes. Thoroughly flush all equipment with MEK. Unused clean material maybe returned to the original container. Clean Up: Clean up all equipment after use with MEK. It is good practice to periodically flush out spray equipment during the course of the day. Frequency of cleaning will depend on amount sprayed, temperature, and elapsed time including any delays. All surplus materials and empty containers should be disposed of in accordance with appropriate regional regulations / legislation.
APPLICATION OVER A PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED SYSTEM Surface Prep: Adjust the extent of surface preparation to reflect the quality of the existing System. If the system is damaged through to the substrate then the area should be re-prepared and the complete system reinstated. Should the system be in good condition the surface should be made free of contaminates and washed with a suitable solvent prior to re-coating. PV111-PRIME maybe omitted if the surface has not needed to be blasted. Reapplication: As per Application.
PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS This product has been developed to perform as a system in conjunction with PV211-INTER intermediate coat and the optional PV311-TOP top coat. The use of PV111-PRIME is integral to the performance of the complete system; in some cases the use of other primers will give inferior performance. The use of PV311-TOP is primarily used to achieve a gloss finish to the paint system and as such maybe omitted without detriment to the system performance in some cases.
